Today I have realized they have posted 200 articles on my blog since its creation.

I have written articles, do it yourself, posted photos, videos and news. Some posts were great, some were curious. I am happy to see my mail box filled with messages from anglers all over the world. This blog thing is not easy to do or maintain but I am trying to give my best.
It is good to know that all these posts will be remain on the web for a long time and that they will come up to someone screen after a search on google or clicking a link on a angling forum.
My intent is to continue with this blog as long as I have a passion for lure fishing, which I think will last forever :)

JDM Tackle is another store that I like to shop from time to time. The owners are great people and very helpful during the shopping process. Anyway, I am arming myself for the spring season so I got myself some nice lures and hooks. Some of you might say that I buy lots of lures and don't fish much. Well it is correct to say that during the winter season I don't have much chance to fish in my area. During the winter I find myself in a sea too cold even for the seabass. I have to move south for about 300km but right now I don't have the time due to work. Anyway we are in March and the month of May is almost here. I plan to go somewhere where I can use some of the heavy stuff I just got. Aiming to get some nice action soon.

This morning I got a nice surprise in my mailbox. Our friend TheUrbanCastMan has landed another great Bonito (Sarda Sarda) with the DUO Press Bait Saira.
This lure is on my wish list and I will get it soon. With 50g. you can cast it a mile and pelagic fishes like bonitos love it.

News from Japan: DUO and Major Craft

This morning I spent my time reading the newspaper and browsing my favorite fishing sites.
I found two news worth sharing on my blog.
First of all, DUO is working on a very ambitious project right now. They are about to introduce the Realis Jerkbait 120 to the worldwide market. I say ambitious because this lure will be available in different setting to meet the expectations and demands of angler worldwide. There will be floating, sinking models, bigger stronger hooks, tungsten weights and so on. Basically they are making a lure that will work in all the waters around the world.Hats off to DUO for such a great design and idea. Meanwhile check this link and the photo below. Looks promising.

The other news comes from Major Craft's official blog.
The busy staff of MC is testing a new rod for scabbard fish angling. It is still in development phase but the blog has posted a photo of a all black rod with identification label on it. It is impressive the number of rod models they keep designing. Worth keeping an eye on them.

DUO Goes To NA

So, I have already wrote about what I think of DUO strategy in the international market. They are one of the first Japanese companies to came up with a good marketing plan in order to expand their market on an international levels. I admire their lures as much as their effort to promote them worldwide. They make good use of the website (the English pages are great), facebook and keep in touch with key bloggers around the world.
Now they made a big step by entering one of the biggest markets available : North America.

Indeed the NA market is a big one but also very competitive. The are hundreds of companies already involved in the market and it might take some time for DUO to gain some share. On the other hand the products are excellent so is the team that DUO has setup on the other side of the pond.
I heard that the first biggest step will be in the freshwater market, with products of the Realis range.The Realis lures dedicated to bass fishing, a big thing in the US.
I am sure they will be successful with this new and ambitious project. I believe it will be all easy when you have a winner in your hand and a well executed sales/marketing effort.
They already have a new Facebook Page. Give it a look.

Ok, so I envy my friend Alessandro. He goes in beautiful places, catches fishes, tests new lures, takes photos and comes back home with a nice smile on his face.
He just came from a trip in Guinea Bissau and shared some amazing shots with us.
He mostly used his own lures and had the chance to test some of his new creations. I think nothing is better than having your designed lures tested on some waters like those of the African Country.
He also tested some lures of my Italian friends Seaspin. I can see a Coixedda and Pro-Q in the mouth of big sized fishes.
It is all too good: the fishes, the setting, the anglers, the lures...

DUO Press Bait Kamuy

This is an interesting lure by DUO. It is basically a jig minnow from the Press Bait series. They have the look of a minnow but they are castsand have an action like a jig.

I heard good things about the Press bait series and especially the Saira. My friend UrbanCastman takes nice fishes in Italy with the Saira.
The Kamuy model was designed for salmon trout fishing in the Hokkaido. It has a slim body that mimics bait-fish and comes with a single salmon hook (Owner s-61 1/0 single hook) that give a solid hold.
My friend told me that has an amazing fluttering movement during the drop. It just flutters attracting the fishes.
When searching over Google I have found pictures of bonitos and garfishes taken with the kamuy.
I have been impressed also by the special assist cord of the hook. It is a short loop that is formed by a very short assist cord. It gives flexibility to the whole hook.

Geecrack Field Pouch: The ultimate LRF Bag?

I am very interested in fishing gear. Not only tackle but also anything related to it transportation. I try and test many models and decide on which one is the best to use. I have started with non specific outdoor bags, I tried fly fishing specific gear with success, but lately I have focused on anything that would work perfectly for my type of fishing. I did lots of research online and found very interesting brand, that of course, is from Japan.
The company is called Geecrack and in my opinion they make some fine products specific for the saltwater anglers. They have a range of products that includes bags, hip bags, slingbags, jig bags, backpacks and so on. The color choices are wide and you can definitely find something for your taste.
The Field Pouch got my attention. I was looking for something compact for my LRF fishing. The hipbag I currently use is a fly fishing bag from Fishpond. A very reputable Fly fishing gear company, but it was too big for my need.
Anyway, to cut it short, I put my hands on this great Geecrack bag. Is this the bag I was looking for? Didn't try it yet but it surely looks like a winner. Enjoy the review below and the official video too! Every picture has some caption under it.

Here is the bag. Comes with a shoulder strap too. I chose the black/fluo
green combo. Looks nice enough.

The rear has an attachment for the belt. I think it is useful if you want
to use it almost as a mini hip bag. I am planning to use it this way.

Also comes with a blue anodized carabiner. It gives the possibility to attach it
virtually everywhere you want.

The front zip is great for small items such as leader spools or even
car keys.

Front pouch is useful for small items or even cell phones.

Inside is where it shines most. Double compartment with separator.

I can fit three Meiho Boxes : One Large, One Medium Sized SFC Boxes and
a small Meiho "cellphone like" small terminal tackle box. More than
enough for any kind of LRF. Actually the L size allows to carry even14 cm lures
so it can be used for some medium weight fishing too.

Here is the bag with all the boxes inside. Still looks
compact and easy to transport.

Another cool feature is the pliers sheath.
Very essential!

I think this LRF craze is getting bigger and bigger.
I can definitely see more sites and facebook pages about this interesting ultra light fishing method.
My favorite store has started selling lots of LRF stuff lately. I am sure this is a nice addition to the range of products available in the inventory. Getting LRF stuff was kind of difficult for me but now I have access to many tackle for this specific method. Right now you can find fine brands like Ecogear, Tict, Owner, Deps, Reins and Mars online.
If you are a LRF aficionado check it!

Just received another package from Japan. It is winter and outside is -1 degree. I really missed fishing and the only way to past time is to order some nice stuff from Japan.
This weekend I will write more about it.

Today I had the chance to grab my camera and take a shot of the new jig I just got form my local tackle store.
Right now I am pondering on what single hook to use on this beauty. Probably a single assist hook dressed with some flash. I have to decide on the size.

IMA GUN 12g. and Sufix Invisiline

Today I went to my local tackle store and got myself a couple of IMA Gun jigs. The store was selling only the 12 g version so I just opted for those and ordered the 7 g. from Japan.
I like the shape and the overall quality seems good. Well, it is an IMA, so it has to look good anyway.
The jig comes with no hooks but it is no problem for me. I need to decide on the hook size and be ready to try it soon.
I think the 12 g. version is useful on those situations where you see some surface blitz of mackerel or even little tunny (false albacore). Also might be useful for garfish in port area.
Anyway it needs to be tested.

The other items I got are two spools of fluorocarbon leader by Sufix. I got the 6lb and 12lb versions. The 6lb will be used for LRF while the 12lb looks a good choice for light seabass fishing in port area. I usually buy Seaguar but since it isn't available right now I decided to try a brand that has good a good reputation. I clearly stay away from unknown or low quality brands.

I like fly tying. Every time I have an idea I go to the vise and wrap something new.
After seeing a couple of small "flies" made specifically for fishing aji (horse mackerel) with caro setup.
I have seen some examples of lures made with krsytal flash and fish skin "sabiki style". I did an experiment and tied a 8 size hook with some flash and skin. I added a small bead to give it some weight on the head. I may try to tie it on a jighead too (like this one here).
For now is just a work in progress.

AquaWave Lures

I have posting some LFR stuff lately. I got many comments and emails about brands like Tict and Ecogear.
There is another brand that I have tried with success. It is AquaWave by Viva, another japanese company that specializes mostly in ultra light and jigging tackle.
If you check their website you will find some interesting products, from soft to hard lures.

I am actually using one of their jigheads. The "RockBait" It does have some neat darting action, comparable with the Shirasu Fine Head of Ecogear. The shape of the head is ideal for darting.

Nowadays, more and more Japanese tackle companies are adding an "English" page to their official websites.
I think the brands have understood the potential of reaching overseas customers and they are using the web as a mean to show the products to all over the world. It makes sense because the Japanese companies make amazing products that deserve to be sold and used by anglers worldwide.
One of the latest companies to open an English site is Angler's Republic. A very reputable company that makes mostly rods. They have an extensive line of products ranging from trout rods to jigging.

News from Osaka 2012 : Tict "Dart Jighead"

In my previous posts I was writing about the Osaka Show and some LRF tackle made by Tict. Today I am sharing this short video that just came out fresh from the show in Japan.
Tict is introducing a new jighead named "Dart Jighead". It looks really like a mix between a dart and a minnow lip. Very curious about the action it will produce in the water.

I want to try them as soon as possible but I am waiting for the harsh weather (snow) to calm down a little bit.

This is an impressive PE line for the price. It is the entry model by the famous Japanese YGK brand. It is a 3 strand braid but looks and feels smooth enough. This one is 0.4 PE rated at 6lb. The package has a great feature that allows to spool the reel with ease. I think it is patented. Great stuff.

The Osaka Fishing Show has almost opened the doors and Daiwa is already putting online some info about the new products.

Another cool contest made by DUO is over. Again, three lucky anglers will get their hands on some great lures and promo material from the Japanese lure maker.

Duo asked the facebook fans their "favorite lure size" and yesterday it published the results.

The undisputed winner has been size 175mm, followed by 140mm and 120mm. These are all sizes of the famous "tide minnow" series, a minnow that has made the difference for many anglers all over the world.

It is now time to congratulate the winners and wait for the next contest that will be come out very soon!

Osaka 2012 Fishing Show

Something very important is going to happen this weekend in Osaka, Japan.
The Osaka Fishing Show is one of the most important shows of the industry and certainly a dream for every JDM tackle enthusiast. It is the show where all our favorite Japanese brands introduce the latest and coolest products to the public. I wish I could visit it, but for now I will be just staying in front of the PC waiting for some new video uploads that usually start showing up on the net during the show.
Check this blog frequently because I will try to write anything that I can find about the show.
Companies like Daiwa and Shimano give lots of importance to the show. Expect some great stuff like reels and rods from these two brands.
On Daiwa's official page there already teasers and tidbits of info about new reels like the Exist and Catalina.

New Major Craft Trout Rod is Out: Nextino

I have written about this upcoming rod in a previous post (see here). Now more details about the rod are available at Major Craft website.

The rod looks great. Nice blank colors (blue and dark brown), quality cork grips, classy looking reel seats and latest Fuji K-Guides. The rod is available both as Area and Stream models.
The Area models are ultra light rods while the stream models go from ultra light to Heavy. For the Stream Series the shortest and lightest is the 4.8ft and 1-8g. while the longest and heavier is the 8.6ft 6-25g.
The Area models ranges from 6.0ft to 6.6ft with casting weight between 0.5 and 4g.

Just found this one on Daiwa's official homepage (Japanese). We already know the famous 17 and 14cm versions. I even have the 12cm version and now Daiwa is introducing the 10cm version armed with size 10 trebles. It looks like a great alternative for fishing in calm waters like ports and estuaries. Sometimes I need to use minnows that are small enough to attract local seabass. Let's wait and see more. I am sure some videos will be up pretty soon over the net.
Worth checking it.

Great News from Cloud Nine Tackle

As a LRF enthusiast myself, I couldn't be more happier when I saw that one of my favorite online store has started selling some ultralight tackle.

Cloud Nine has just introduced some very nice gear made by Tict, a japanese company that specializes in aji (Horse Mackerel) and mebaru (Rockfish) fishing. Give it a look if you are interested.

On the other hand I realized that the store has started selling USED gear too which is some great news if you are looking for the next great bargain. Worth a check.

News from DUO: Realis Minnow 80SP

I am a fan of saltwater lures because I "love" fishing in the salt. However sometimes I use lures that are designed for freshwater fishing but that are excellent on the fishes that I catch. In Europe, anglers usually say that the seabass can be caught with almost everything that is used for freshwater bass. Small minnows or soft lures always got the interest of the European seabass.

Realis is the name of lures for freshwater bass made by DUO. They keep expanding this line with new models and 2012 looks like an interesting year.
There is a lure that caught my attenton the Minnow 80SP. I like it a lot. 80mm for 4.8g and many colors to choose from. This lure is a suspending model ideal for twitch and jerk technique.
The price is good (1.100YEN) and I am very interested in the D-62 and D-77 colors. The D-62 especially for some murky waters.
It looks like a terrific lure for some seabass fishing in port area or calm estuary waters. Oh, also I am sure it will be terrific for catching some freshwater bass as well.

50 is not a great number but it means a lot to me. Today I have reached 50 followers and this makes me really happy.
I have started this blog in October and in a short time I have met new friends and received good comments from all over the world.
My intention is to keep this blog always updated and easy to read. It is just an hobby, a way to keep in touch with the world of fishing and share my experiences and ideas about this great outdoor sports.

I thank everybody for reading my posts and giving me support. It is much needed and appreciated.

I hope to write a post that says "100" in a short time :)

This is a blog that I have discovered a couple of weeks ago. The name of the blog is already cool, but what strikes me is the original layout and the very informative posts that you find in it.
It is a blog run by some European Seabass fanatics living in Holland. They have anything from videos to tackle news. It is a new blog with not many posts but I am sure it will grow bigger in no time.

I recommend you to give it a look. It is a nicely made blog and look promising.

Carolina rig setup for Ultra Light Fishing

When fishing for horse mackerel I usually prefer a regular setup with a 1.5-2.g jighead, 5lb fuoro and 0.6 PE braid. Sometimes, if I need distance I rely on a carolina setup. It is basically a setup that involves a weight followed by a leader and very light jighead or weightless hook.
The trick here is to decide on what weight to use for casting the small soft lures.
There is a company in japan named Tict that offers a special "caro weight" for this kind of setup. The website offers a nice draw on how the setup is supposed to work. Also there are videos that show the rig in action.

The setup: FC or braid line + Caro Weight + small swivel + 20/30cm FC leader 3/6lb and final light (0.2 / 0.4 g.) jighead.

I am not a fan of "weights" between the line and the lure, but sometimes it is needed to reach some distance or a certain deep when using ultra light soft lures.

I have also tried a different setup using these as weights.

The Tict version might be better because has the small "pipe" that is snug free. I also used a similar one made by Italian company Stonfo.

With a 4gr. models I was able to cast about 35m with a ultralight rod setup.

What about the jighead?

I have been lure fishing for years and until now I have only tried and used a bunch of braids. My first choice has been the TUF Line XP. A braid that I used with good success for years. A regular 4 strand braid with good castability and abrasion resistance. I had friends who used the regular Power Pro saying that it was the best braid out there. In all these years I have tried it only once on my friend's reel and I didn't see much of a difference compared to the TUF line. It was good but in my opinion not any better than the Tuf XP.
Last year, after extensive reading on the net, I decided to switch to a 8 strand braid made by Varivas (Super PE) and I was quite pleased with the smoothness and the overall small diameter of the braid. I quickly felt the the difference of four strands vs eight strands.The advantage of 8 strands was so clear that I decided to stick with it for my future purchases. Just when I was about to ditch the TUF line and the Power Pro, I read about the new Power Pro Super 8 Slick braid. My first thought was "If Power Pro is good, a 8 strand version must be even better". I finally placed an order over the net and this week I received my Power Pro Super 8 Slick from Cabelas.

10 lb test 150 yards

It is still on the box and I haven't spooled it yet. For now I will just give my first impressions and later do a proper test on the water. I got a 10lb aqua green color spool.

Aqua Green color looks much better than the previous green.

At first look, the aqua green color is an improvement over the "old classic" dark green. It looks fresh and the color is bright enough to be seen in the water. Not as flashy as the yellow but still easy to spot in the water without scaring fishes.
The braid looks tight woven, round and neat. There isn't anything sloppy or presence of frayed fibers.

The braid is smooth.

Time to spool it on my Elf 2500.

At the touch, I can easily tell the difference with a regular Power Pro. This things is smooth as silk. The 8 strands do really feel great. Compared to the Varivas I couldn't tell much of a difference. It is just smooth. Maybe it is a little larger in diameter than the Super PE at a similar breaking strength but still feels light and silky.

The question is how it casts and how it resists abrasion. Also wind knots are a big question. These are details that need to be checked on the field. Details coming soon...

DUO Lures Painting Process

I like to see how my favorite fishing tackle are made. I have already posted some nice links on how Maria lures (see here) and fishing rods are made (see here). This time I have found a very interesting post on DUO's facebook page that shows how these amazing lures are painted. After reading about the painting process I understood why those lures looks so great. There is an incredible craftsmanship behind it. Many hours and skilled hands that transform a transparent plastic item in a real looking minnow.

The lures are painted with an airbrush. No wonder they look so great.

Hand made airbrushing, 5-6 coats of paints, paint masks and curing time. A DUO lures takes almost 25 minutes to get through all the painting process. Everything is done with the utmost care and dedication. About 5000 lures are painted every day. Check the whole painting process at DUO's official blog. Worth a reading.

One coat is done. Time for the paint to cure and start the second coat.

I have talked about this amazing topwater lure here.
What didn't look right for me was the original single hook that comes standard on the lure. I have made some research and by using some creativity I have come up with a short assist hook. It is essentially a Owner Aki hook with a very short assist cord and solid ring. Now it is time to test it. If anybody has already tested this combo please send me a comment. I always look for innovation and different alternatives when it comes to hooks.

Rockfishing is fun. I think that you don't need to catch a big fish in order to have fun. It is all about the fishing itself that brings joy and emotions. I do like ultralight fishing as much as I like seabass fishing. Different tackle and preys but the rod bends the same way and the reel drag can scream too.

I try to follow everything related to ultralight fishing online. My last discovery is a facebook group named Rockfishing Spain. It is mostly in Spanish but I enjoy following this group because everyday I see new posts about tackle and some cool pictures. My friend Sam is an active user of this page and I enjoy checking its latest photos and pictures of the lures he uses. He gives me some inspiration for my fishing.

Another interesting website I found while browsing the net.

Fishing Vision TV is Japanese fishing channel that is available only in Japan. The website has lots of info and short previews of their programs. There is however a section called "Gear Station" that offer full length videos on fishing equipment.

Basically two presenters invite a company spokesperson to introduce a product. The products range from rods to fishing jackets. It is in japanese, so it doesn't help much but you might have the chance to get a closer look to some interesting products (like the IMA video) or maybe just enjoy it because you are a Japanese Tackle enthusiast like me.

Seaspin Jack Spin Links

I think a good snap is essential in lure fishing. It is a crucial link between the lure and the leader and sometimes it might get stressed by a big fish. I have already wrote a few words on snaps here.

Here is attached to a Daiwa Saltiga Minnow 12cm.

I like especially the Decoy Egg snap and the breakaway spin link. The breakaway link is strong and easy to use but it is too bulky and big for my type of fishing. I always looked for a snap designed as a "paper clip" that would not be too big and interfere with the swimming action of my lures. Finally I think I have found something for giving a try. The Italian company Seaspin makes a interesting snap named Jack Spin-Link. An hybrid between a Decoy Egg and a breakaway. Looking by the picture is a winner for me. It is compact, the "water drop" shape should allow good movement and the paper clip type attachment looks solid. It comes in 3 sizes but I like the 20lb better for my fishing. The snap itself looks more solid than the 20lb test rating. I don't know why it is rated at 9.6kg. Anyway I think it matches my type of fishing with no problem. Now it is time to try it on the water.

Compared to the Breakaway. The Seaspin is more compact.

When it comes to fishing I am very picky in the technical gear department. I rely on good brands and usually when I like something that I enjoy I just stick with those brands. Call it brand loyalty.
There are two categories where I am very loyal: Outer Gear and Sunglasses.
I give very much importance at what I wear when I am out there fishing. I think a pair of good polarized sunglasses are a must if you do any kind of fishing. Maybe it might look like a good pair of polarized glasses are required only for shallow fishing or fly fishing in rivers, but it is not the case. They take out the glare, which means you can be more comfortable while looking at the sea, not only for searching fishes feeding at the bottom.
There are two brands out there that I like a lot. One is Smith Optics and the other one is Costa Del Mar.
My first pair were Smith Optics Commander model with grey lenses and a cool metal frame. I still use it but it is kind of too dark when fishing at dawn. I had to get an alternative so I ended up with a pair of Costa Del Mar glasses that features interchangeable lenses. It comes with three shades useful for most of my fishing situations.
I kinda fell in love with Costa not only for their nice products but also because they are a real fishing sunglasses company and if you give a look at their website you will be impressed by "how cool" it looks. It gives you the feel of sunny days, tropical waters, unexplored places, big fishes and great adventures. Just check their website. There is so much stuff related to fishing: Destinations, Reports, Films, Fish conservation projects, etc.
I like the company and the effort they have put on the website. I am a angler and a marketer, so anytime I see well executed website I feel the urge to share it on my blog.

Seaspin Buginu

The guys at the Italian company Seaspin have a small range of lures in the catalogs, yet their lures are sure winners. I have to admit that I have heard a lot about them but didn't have the chance to see them in real life for a long time. Now I have some of those lures in hand and before testing in the water near home I decided to write an introduction and take some nice photos.

I have friends that have already enjoyed many fishes with these lures. The most used one seems to be the Mommotti 140 and 180. The other two lures that Mediterrean fishes seems lo love are the Coixxedda 100 and the Buginu 140. Today I am writing a short intro about the Bugino. Also with some help from their website.

The Buginu is a lure characterized by a innovative lip design that gives it an unique performance and produces sharp and fast vibration while swimming. The casting performance also is great and the lip allows to keep the movement in strong current. It has an inner armor reinforced lip and size 4 treble hooks.
As told above, it is a lure that is doing very well in the Mediterrean sea. There are many reports online (with pictures) of barracudas, bluefish and seabass taken with the Bugino. It has a different look than other minnows. It would be interesting to see if it catches some of the nice seabasses that we have here. More details later.

Bugino Specs:
Type: slow sinking minnow, long casting

Depth Range: 60-120 cm (2-4 ft)

Action:

Slow retrieve: light wobbling
Regular retrieve: wobbling & light rolling

Jerking: Beginning and ending each jerk with a slack period after single to multiple jerks. Increase frequency between jerks and pauses as fish activity level increases.

The lip of the Bugino is pretty original. It allows the minnow to dive deep.

There are many reports of barracudas taken in Italy with the Buginu 140.

A nice bluefish got fooled.

Smallest sizes are on the works. Something is expected for 2013.

Meiho SFC Multi Case L

You already know about my obsession for boxes made by Meiho Chemical. I have already reviewed the SFC box in the size M (here) and told how pleased I am with this lure box that comes with no dividers.
Today I have received via mail a bigger model, the size L. I think this size is perfect for anything between 12 and 14 cm in length. I don't like to go to a fishing trip with heavy and big boxes and the size of the L model (186x103x34mm) is a perfect match for my needs. Below you can see the box with lures inside to get a better idea on how many lures it can hold.

I like to put decorative stickers on the boxes. This one is by DUO.

Three lures sized between 135 and 140 mm .

Here is the box filled. I could manage to put three DUO Tide Lures, one Rapala

This is a photo that I took in Naples, Florida back in 2007.
It has a special meaning for me because this was the first snook I saw getting hooked. It was a sunny afternoon and I wasn't fishing that day as I was enjoying the view from the famous Naples Pier. There were plenty of anglers with rod trying to lure the snooks who were cruising under the pier. I still remember the moment I took this picture. A guy was fishing with a small yellow bucktail then one of snook suddenly attacked it. The rod bent and the angler started fighting the fish from above. A couple of seconds and I was ready with the camera to take the shot. Great memories...

I have already wrote some posts in my blog about one of my favorite fish to catch: the bluefish (Pomatomus Saltatrix). I first learned how to catch this fish in Europe but the "real" encounter with this amazing fish has been in the US and specifically on the East Coast. I have spent days chasing large size bluefish in the flats and the surf. I got big ones and even the small ones,known as "snappers". I tried to learn about it as much as possible about bluefish and fishing techniques. Somehow for me the bluefish was more valuable to chase than the striped bass. It is the strength and aggressiveness of the blues that keeps me chasing it still today.
While looking for some reference books I found a very interesting piece of literature that features the Saltatrix.
"Blues" is a book written by Pulitzer winner John Hersey written in 1988.
It is a semi-novel I would say. It portrays a series of imaginary conversations between a fisherman and a stranger on the famous Martha Vineyard Island in Massachusetts. The fisherman takes the the stranger to fishing, every time they meet, he teaches him everything he knows about the bluefish, from how to catch it, to its feeding habits, fauna, reproduction cycles and so on.

I think this book is a must read for every fisherman. It is short and easy to read. Includes interesting fishing stories, scientific facts, poetry and even cooking. All these conversations and information are set in the soft and delightful atmosphere of Martha's Vineyard, which is indeed a great spot for fishing this amazing fish.

Little Fish Holder

This is a cute fish holder for sure. Made by Japanese company Osamu's Factory, this little tool looks perfect for the LRF enthusiast. It is small, just 10cm and easy to use. I am not sure about the reliability in salty environment but it should be fine.Don't know if is available outside Japan.

I am very interested in ultra light fishing and I try to "absorb" any info that I can find on the net regarding this quite new type of lure fishing that is spreading in Europe.

Yesterday I ended up in a very interesting article written by a fishing store specialized in LRF. The name of the store is "The Art of Fishing" and is located in the U.K. It sells lots of Japanese tackle with a focus on light stuff.

The article in question is an introduction to LRF (Light Rock Fishing) and I think it is written superbly. In a few paragraphs you get the idea on what tackle you need to start this terrific and addicting type of fishing.

A new lure company: Jumprize

While checking my friends' blogs I ran into a new lure made by a new company name Jumprize. The name of the lure is Rowdy 130F and was developed by Yuki Inoue, a very famous japanese seabass angler and world record holder for the black fin japanese seabass.

The lure looks awesome and it is already a very demanded item in Japan. Apparently Yuji is a legend and at the same time a great lure designer being the creator of the famous IMA sasuke 140 Reppa Lure.

I think this lure has the potential to be a seabass killer in Europe and earn an high reputation among anglers.

These are the specs of the lure:

Smith Line Clipper

I have tried many line clippers. I always found something wrong with most of them. Some were flimsy, other not sharp, others hard to use. After several brands and models I found this one below made by Smith Ltd.
It is a regular clipper but somehow I have been very please so far. The edge is still sharp after many uses and it is easy to press and cut. I can't find it anymore online but if you find it just give it a try.

Some rust after heavy use. Still cuts fluoro leaders with ease.

The engraved Smith Ltd. logo is a nice touch.

I know by experience that in saltwater fly fishing white and chartreuse work very well and this might explain this trend.

Windy days,intimidating waves, big swells, strong currents? If you are fishing in this kind of conditions you have to choose a lure specifically designed that will allow you to cast and fish efficiently. One of these lures is the DUO Tide Minnow Surf series. DIY: How to make ultra light assist hooks

I like dealing with small sized jigs, hooks, softbaits and everything that is ultralight. Months ago I found a jig that featured a small micro sized assist hook made the same way as the bigger ones used on 60-100g. jigs.

The principle is the same. The assist hook goes to the top or bottom of the jig and allows a secure hook up to the fish.

I am interested in tying flies as well so I realized that I should get some fun by tying this small assist hooks for fun. The materials are quite easy to obtain. A wide gap small sized hook (iseama or chinu type are good for me) , some 50lb PE line as assist line, fly tying thread, crazy glue and some flash.

The result is a nice looking micro assist hook. Below is a quick explanation step by step.

I use a small size 8 or 6 wide gap hook. Iseama - Chinu models are fine.

For the assist line you can use a 30ln or 50lb braid PE line.

Red colored thread and bobbin.

Cut the PE at the desired length.

Make a loop and place it on the shank of the hook.

Start wrapping the thread

Add some flash material. I use Crystal Flash.

Drop some crazy glue for a finishing and securing the wrap.

Hook is ready to go.

You can attach it to a small jig with a split ring or directly to the lure snap.

New Rapala MaxRap 5

If you have checked the 2012 Rapala Catalog, you probably already saw the new 5cm MaxRap introduced for year 2012. Given the popularity of the MaxRap series I am sure that this little lure will be a big excitement for all the ultralight anglers out there. The 5cm minnow weights 2gr. and has the same shape and features of the bigger brothers.
We just need to get one and test it.

New Daiwa Ballistic

Today I had the chance to handle the new Daiwa Ballistic reel at my local tackle shop.
This new reel introduced by Daiwa this year, has many features that have been a trademark for the Japanese company. The design of the reel is very similar to the JDM "Freams" which has been on my radar for a long time.

My impressions:

I liked the design, the dark red metallic trim looks awesome, so does the shiny charcoal colored body.
It feels solid and after a single spin of the handle I realized that it is a very smooth reel, similar to my actual Daiwa Team Advantage.

What I did like:

I liked the dark color and the dark red ruby trims.
The reel is smooth. You can feel the digigear in there.
Waterproof drag.
High Speed Retrieve.
Light reel thanks to the Zaion Body.
Cool looking air rotor
Torx screws for the reel body

What I didn't like:
Somehow this med-high priced reel is made in China. Usually these kind of reels were made in Malaysia.
The body looks cool but on a closer look the painted surface looks a little uneven. Too plastic for my taste.

Conclusion:
Overall a good reel. The Japanese company has improved the looks of the reels and the new features are interesting. The zaion material gives lightness but the paint job looked a little flawed. The fact that is made in China bothers me a little. Maybe Daiwa has implemented great Q.C. over there.

I would like to compare it with the Caldia and the JDM Freams. I wish I could handle those too.

I have tried the size 4000 which is ideal for some medium-heavy fishing.

Jackson Pin Tail E Z

Jackson Lures is another Japanese company that produces high quality lures. I especially like their "athlete" minnow series.
I found an interesting lure while browsing their website. It is named Pin Tail E Z and what strikes me is the high weight to length ratio. The small 9cm minnow weights 28 gr. and mounts heavy duty Owner St-56 trebles. The bib is robust and allows the minnow to dive deep.
It is ideal for fishing from shore.

New lures

I have been sick lately and didn't have the chance to update the blog as I used to do.
I'll try to recover soon and write some new post soon.

In the meantime I have received some cool lures made by an Italian company named Seaspin.
I realized that Italians can do more than exotic cars and great shoes. These lures look great and I have heard good things from my fellow anglers around the Mediterrean area. Right now I am holding on my desk some of their best selling models. A long jerk named Mommotti, a shallow diving minnow, a long casting minnow and a walk the dog.

I will review them soon.

Book: The Fishermen's Ocean

I have read many books about fishing. Most of them tells stories or explains how to catch fish. However this book "The Fishermen's Ocean" written by David Ross stands apart. The book is written by a oceanographer who happens to be also an avid fisherman. For this reason the book is a guide to fishing written by a scientific standpoint. Ross explains how to catch fish by analyzing tides, currents, rips, moon phases, weather conditions, fishes' biology, fishes' behavior, etc.

It provides with almost 300 pages of useful information about our oceans and it is a book that has to be in your library if you are interested not only in catching fish but understand the environment where they live.
Ross, being a fly fisherman living on the East Coast of the US, focuses the book on mostly fishing situations common to the Atlantic Ocean but it is definitely recommended for all the anglers in the world.

Shimano Elf C2000S

Finally I have opened the box that just came in from Cloud Nine Tackle Japan.

I already own the Shimano Elf 2500 and I have decided to go ahead and pick the C2000S for my ultralight setup. I am going to make a combo with the Nissin Atlas rod I have purchased some time ago.

The reel has a compact body, hence the designation C, and comes with a shallow spool (S stands for shallow). The reason I went with a shallow spool is that I am planning on using a very thin 0.6 PE braid and this spool allows me to put 150m of it with no problems. A deeper regular spool would need an extra nylon backing to fill the spool,which I find rather annoying.

The reel is 215g. which will balance perfectly with my 7.4ft rod.

At the price range of 6000 YEN is a very satisfying reel.

I will review the reel once I'll add the braid and go catching some horse mackerel.

Meiho SFC Multi Case

You already know that I am a fan of Meiho boxes. My last discovery is the SFC Multi Case model. SFC stands for System Fishing Combo and are value priced polypropylene lure boxes that come in several sizes and configurations. My favorite one is the "Multi" configuration which is the box without any dividers.

I think a configuration without dividers gives the possibility to put more lures inside the box. You don't have a restriction on any kind of length or width. Also it is flexible enough to use it for other purposes like storing shore jigging equipment or hooks.

I use the M model for small-medium sized lures in the 7-9cm range. The L sized box is better suited for everything in the 10-14cm length.

SFC Multi Case M size.

These boxes are tough and easy to use. The red latch and the hinges are rock solid. The price also is good.

The other day I found this very nice Japanese online shopping website named Fishing Square.

They only sell in Japan and do not ship overseas (as I am aware of) but I am writing about it because it is one definitely one of the most detailed website I have ever seen.
The amount of effort put on this site is enormous. You will get the idea once you start browsing the hundreds of products. Every product sold here is described to the smallest details with close ups, diagrams, comparison charts, size charts and hook-lure combination ideas.
